The Japanese language proficiency test or JLPT is standardized to evaluate and certify efficiency of Japanese language for non-native speakers or to the speakers whose Japanese is not a native language. The test checks the ability to read and speak and knowledge of language.

Criteria of the language

The test has 5 levels beginning form N1 to N5, being N5 the elementary and N1 being the highest level of evaluation.

The score of test does not expire or stays valid interminably.

Scoring Pattern

The scores are analyzed or calculated through a paradigm. The scores after the test are the raw scores and the scores are identified into a set parameter which helps the system to convert them in to a standard scale. The scales score are reported and broken down by section, and these scores are finally lands a decision of passing criteria.

Qualifying Criteria

The test requires passing in both an overall criteria for the total points, and getting through the section separately; these are based on scaled scores.

The sectional scores are taken to ensure the balance between each skill.

Level Reading Listening Competence Required
N1 The ability to read the writings with comprehension and set the logical structures understanding. The ability to understand the oral conversations under various circumstances, and is able to move with coherence. The ability is to understand the language ( advanced level)

N2 The competence to read materials written clearly on variety of topics. The ability to perceive the language clearly and comprehend the spoken contents. The ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree.( pre-advanced level )

N3 The capability of reading and understanding written materials on specific topics. One is able to read the headlines and phrases required in daily life. The competence to perceive the conversation at a natural speed. The competence to comprehend the language ( intermediate level)

N4 The aptitude to read and comprehend passages on familiar topics with a foundation language structure. The aptitude to set an understanding with group of sentences spoken slowly. The ability to understand the language basically.
N5 One is able to read and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. The ability to pick up significant information from a group of words spoken slowly. The potential to understand the language at a footing level.
