When we think of a distillation column, we often overlook what goes into the column itself. The distillation system is filled with packing. There are two different common types: structured and dump packed columns.

Structured Column sound exactly the same. Column packed with pre-made packing. It can be made of metal, plastic or ceramic. The dump packing consists of the same material, but as the name suggests, the packing is simply dumped into the column. dump packings are usually individualized pieces that come in pre-made segments, unlike structured packings.One column packing strategy is no better than another. As a general guideline for distillation column packaging, dump packaging is mandatory if the system is 4 inches or less in diameter. There is no structured packing small enough to fit.
