Knowing the Root of the Problem

Before you try to buy every treatment available out there, make sure that you know the source of the problem. There are different causes and reasons why women suffer from hair loss, so it is advisable for you to visit your local doctor, or local dermatologist to figure out the reason behind it first. Most doctors don't offer pills that you have to take weekly or monthly because most pills that you have to take orally can affect the balance of your body's androgen levels. Although one reason for hair loss among women is an over active androgen level, unless doctors can confirm that, they would often opt to prescribe their patients some over the counter products that wouldn't have to change or harm the normal function of your body.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil was used as a tablet to treat patients that have high blood pressure. However it was noticed that patients that were being treated with this medicine developed excessive hair growth as well. Since this discovery, scientists have tried to develop a topical treatment with minoxidil in it that you can directly apply to the scalp and it has been proven to be effective. If you are thinking of buying a product for hair loss, make sure it contains minoxidil. There are different concentrations for both men and women, so it is advisable for women to use the advised 2% not the 5% which is thought to be high of a concentration for women.

Estrogen and Progesterone

Some doctors also prescribe women with estrogen and progesterone. It could either be in pill form or a cream that you can apply to your hair. Doctors recommend using this for patients who are either experiencing menopause or those who are lacking estrogen and progesterone for other reasons.

Oral Contraceptives

Although oral contraceptives are commonly used to prevent unwanted pregnancy, some doctors also recommend using this because it helps in decreasing the production of ovarian androgens. You should also keep in mind, that you need to be aware of the reason you are using this pill. There is a certain dosage you are allowed to take if you are doing it solely for treating female baldness. So if you will use it for preventing hair loss, make sure to let your doctor know, so he will know what the best medicine and dosage will be for you.
