American based Federation World Airlines has just acquired a Concorde jet, which will make its inaugural commercial flight from Washington, D.C. to Paris, and then to Moscow as a goodwill gesture prior to the 1980 Olympic Games. Among those on board is Maggie Whelan, a television reporter, who is taking both legs of the trip. Just after boarding at Dulles International Airport, she receives documents conclusively and unequivocally stating that her boyfriend, Dr. Kevin Harrison, the Chairman of Harrison Industries, an aerospace contractor, is complicit in illegally selling arms to enemy regimes. Regardless, Maggie loves Kevin, who vows to do the right thing by making a public statement to his illegal activities. Maggie also intends on making an on-air report of the story once she arrives in Moscow. Kevin, however, has other thoughts. He plans on destroying the documents, the most convenient way being to bring down the Concorde with Maggie aboard, initially having the attack on the plane as a technical error, then pinning the attack on one of the many activist groups opposed to the Concorde itself, or the upcoming Olympics. Concorde pilots Joe Petroni and Paul Metrand do whatever they have to to combat the attacks on the plane, the masterminds behind of which they nor Maggie are aware.
This film is the last of the "Airport" film franchise which stars George Kennedy again in his aviation-disaster struck role as Joe Patroni, who has to contend with nuclear missiles, the French Air Force, and the threat of the plane splitting in two over the Alps. This is all because a lady on board, Maggie has some documents which put Harrison Industries in big trouble (showing that they make nuclear weapons) and their leader, played by Robert Wagner, wants the Concorde to crash with Maggie (Susan Blakely) in it.
I gave this a 3 because Alain Delon was in it. And that's the only reason. Although why he was in it, I don't know.

The Concorde...Airport '79: It garnered so many hysterical laughs that Universal billed it as a comedy instead of a drama. Since it didn't make much money, we can assume that didn't work either.

The plot concerns efforts to kill a TV news journalist played by Susan Blakeley who is flying on The Concorde with some documents that could bring down a prominent man and his corporation. I'd laugh at that, except that in real life, some guy once put a bomb on a plane to kill his mother in the '50s. The Concorde is attacked by drones, there's a bomb, and the plane starts to fall apart.

Just leave it to those pilots, played by George Kennedy, Alain Delon, and David Warner to bring it to safety in a snowbank.

I asked myself why anyone would want to embarrass themselves by appearing in this film. Okay, the old stars - Eddie Albert, Martha Raye, Mercedes McCambridge - needed the money. The TV actors wanted to be in a movie.

But there were some people with money, fame, a measure of respect, and class who had no need to debase themselves: Bibi Andersson, an Ingmar Bergman actress; Robert Wagner; Alain Delon. I felt like saying to Delon, "Honey, Selznick offered you a contract when you were 23 and you asked to be released from it when you received better offers in France. You're 44 now. IT'S OVER. You are an international superstar with no need of America."

Cicely Tyson used to live at her manager's house to cut down on the overhead so she could pick only the best roles. I guess her manager moved to a studio apartment because there she was, clutching the heart harvested for her son.

I'd say skip it - well, I will say skip it - but these are hard times for the world and you might need a chuckle. You'll have a bundle of them. All the Airport movies are stinkers, but this one is the biggest turkey of them all. The formula was different for this one because it focused on TWO disastrous flights and a lot of plot occurring on the ground, while the other movies focused on just one disastrous flight and less plot on the ground. The stunts with the Concorde are worth watching for the laughs, although the special effects aren't as terrible as I'd expect for a movie of this quality made in 1979. George Kennedy's sexist remarks are disgusting and his rendezvous with a prostitute in Paris is totally unnecessary (and made me gag a little). Poor Martha Raye was relegated to a role where she did nothing but relieve her bowel over and over in the Concorde's bathroom. There are no big stars in this movie compared to the previous films, giving you one more reason not to watch this one.
