Combining WAN optimization techniques with the ability to dynamically divert traffic to links that provide sufficient throughput to meet the needs of each application, SD-WAN technology improves application performance.

The programmable WAN automatically switches traffic to another link in the event of failure or congestion. Application performance is all the more improved, and latency reduced.

In an SD-WAN architecture, administrators can reduce or even eliminate their dependence on expensive dedicated MPLS circuits. All they have to do is send the less sensitive and lower priority data over less expensive public Internet links, thus reserving the private links for strategic or latency sensitive traffic such as voice over IP ( VoIP ). The flexibility of SD-WAN technology also reduces the need for over-provisioning and therefore the overall cost of the WAN.

Ideally, SD-WAN simplifies network management and automates deployments, configurations and operation.
