Advancements in Area of Chronic Pain Treatment Offering Patients New Hope

The world is in pain! Chronic pain “...exerts an enormous personal and economic burden, affecting more than 30% of people worldwide.”, says an article in The Lancet. Persisting for up to three months or more, it drastically reduces the quality of life, rendering patients unable to focus on their goals and even perform everyday tasks, such as standing, sitting, and walking, depending on which area is affected. Causes of this condition range from common ones, including poor posture, improper lifting of heavy things, being overweight, wearing high heels, and poor-quality mattresses, to specific ones, such as certain musculoskeletal and neurological diseases (including arthritis and epilepsy, respectively).

These are just a few of the possible causes listed by WebMD for back pain; pain in other body parts has a wide array of other causes. Sometimes, the pain is psychosomatic (mental stress manifesting as physical pain). Often, long-term pain has no obvious cause, which makes it difficult to treat, which creates a high requirement for pain management drugs and devices. Therefore, with an increasing number of people living a painful life, the chronic pain treatment market size is expected to reach $162,175.2 million by 2030.

Often, chronic pain cannot be completely treated; in such cases, therapies generally revolve around lessening its intensity or making it go away for a while. This can be accomplished by an array of drugs, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, corticosteroids, antiarrhythmics, acetaminophen (commonly known as paracetamol), and other analgesics, muscle relaxants, antipsychotics, and lidocaine patches. Then, there are certain devices available, such as analgesic infusion pumps, neurostimulation devices, and ablation devices.

Since older people are more susceptible to medical conditions, including chronic pain, and they are often unable to effectively use the devices prescribed for its management, the sale of painkillers is set to continue to rise. As per the United Nations (UN), population in the age group of 65 and above is expected to increase to 1.5 the billion by 2050 from 727 million in 2020. The elderly are at a high risk of falls and fractures, cancer, and heart diseases. Moreover, as per Cleveland Clinic, around 8% of the people in the U.S. over the age of 65 suffer from some kind of neuropathy.

Moreover, backed by extensive research and development (R&D), pharma companies are gaining regulatory approvals for new drugs. For instance, Orphengesic Forte, a non-opioid medication by Galt Pharmaceuticals, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2020. Its key ingredients are orphenadrine citrate, caffeine, and aspirin. In the same way, the FDA had approved Baudax Bio Inc.’s Meloxicam intravenous injection in February 2020. Moreover, the regulatory submission for Tanezumab, a monoclonal antibody developed by Eli Lilly and Pfizer, was accepted by the FDA in March 2020.

For instance, Eellan Sivanesan, a professor of critical pain medication and anesthesiology at Hopkins, was given the Chronic Pain Medicine Research Grant by the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) in 2018 to study the effect of spinal cord stimulation on tumor growth and chemosensitivity. Moreover, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are studying the role of genetics in chronic pain, so that the understanding of this issue can be improved and people can get better solutions.

Apart from North America, APAC is another significant region in terms of the demand for chronic pain therapies. The region with the most people on earth, its patient population is also the highest in the world, which means it has a huge pool of people experiencing chronic pain. In addition, as per the UN, the geriatric population of Asia will increase to 587 million by 2030 from 395 million in 2019. This means that the population of people with chronic diseases, a lot of which are painful for extended periods, is booming here.

Hence, with advancements in the pain management field, driven by the increasing number of chronic pain patients and strong government support to them, people can expect better solutions in the coming years.
