CHICAGO -- Tyson Ross would have liked to have had better command when he faced what has been a tough Chicago White Sox lineup Saturday. Yet the San Diego Padres right hander had no trouble handcuffing a White Sox offence that is suddenly scuffling. Ross limited the White Sox to two runs -- one earned -- on five hits in six innings, and Huston Street remained perfect in 17 save chances this season the Padres 4-2 victory. Will Venable had a season-high four hits and drove in two runs to help San Diego improve to 20-4 this season when scoring four or more runs. "It was a battle today," Ross said. "The guys gave me a lead early. It wasnt very comfortable though. They were in striking distance the whole time. Theyre a good hitting team. "Anytime you can find a way to get outs when you dont have your best stuff, thats what pitchings all about." Admittedly not having the sharpest control of his pitches against the White Sox, Ross -- aided by a defence that turned double plays in the second and third innings -- helped the Padres inch closer to .500. They are 19-1 this season when leading after the sixth inning. Ross improved to 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his last five starts. "Tyson battled," Padres manager Bud Black said. "It was a workmanlike game for Tyson. Labored a little bit, but overall, a lot of positives. He made some pitches when he needed to." In the third series between the two teams -- and the first since 2005 -- the Padres had the leadoff hitter reach base in seven of the nine innings. The White Sox managed only one base runner in the final four innings. White Sox starting pitcher Andre Rienzo (4-2) struggled to keep the Padres off base and consistently ran into trouble. Rienzo lasted only 3 1-3 innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits. Twice the White Sox cut the Padres lead to one run, but they could never pull closer. Chicago has 23 strikeouts in the past two games against the Padres. "Were just not getting that hit, the hit that gets you over the hump," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I think all teams go through it for a period and the last couple of days thats been us. We havent been able to get the hit that gets you over the hump. Whenever that happens, it looks boring; it looks like theyre not trying. But theyre grinding it out." Dayan Viciedos two-out double to right-centre field scored Adam Eaton, who reached on an error by shortstop Everth Cabrera to start the fifth, to cut the Padres lead to 3-2. San Diego answered in the top of the sixth, extending its lead, 4-2. Alexi Amaristas sacrifice fly scored Venable, who reached on a double and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Paul Konerkos single in the second snapped an 0 for 12 stretch and put runners on the corners for the White Sox after Alexei Ramirez led off the inning with a single. The White Sox cut San Diegos lead to 2-1 on the next play, though Alejandro De Azas double play ball, which scored Ramirez, killed Chicagos rally. San Diego had chances to put Chicago away. Despite loading the bases with nobody out against Rienzo, the Padres only managed to score one run in the third. Center fielder Eaton delivered a perfect throw home on Venables RBI single to nail Carlos Quentin at the plate, keeping San Diegos lead to 3-1. "I think were seeing a little bit of an uptick in our offence," Black said. "Were seeing some averages climb." The Padres took a 2-0 lead in the second scoring on RBI doubles from Venable and Rene Rivera. Padres centre fielder Cameron Maybin left the game with right calf tightness after reaching second base on a fielders choice in the Padres two-run second inning. A diving catch by right fielder Chris Denorfia to end the fourth on Tyler Flowers line drive saved at least one Chicago run from scoring, stranding runners on first and second to maintain a 3-1 Padres lead. NOTES: White Sox 1B Jose Abreu took approximately 10 at-bats during a hitting simulation before Saturdays game. Abreu was hit above his left elbow but finished the simulation. Abreu (osterior tibia tendonitis in his left ankle) will go through another simulation game Sunday. He can be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. "(Abreu) will have to take pitches and I think thats going to be the biggest thing is just reaction-wise," manager Robin Ventura said. "Him seeing pitches and not having send him out on a rehab assignment." ... DH Konerko (back) returned to the White Soxs lineup Saturday after missing the last two games. ... Black decided to give struggling 2B Jedd Gyorko the day off, inserting Amarista in the lineup. Gyorko is 3 for 17 on San Diegos road trip and is batting .169 this season. "Youve got to use your roster and I think today is a good day to give Jedd off from a start," Black said. "Hes been going at it hard and weve been playing him a lot. Jedd will be in there tomorrow." CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Juan Perez hasnt gotten many at-bats in the majors. He didnt need a whole lot of experience to know what was coming this time. Left-hander Tony Cingrani was going to throw a first-pitch fastball. The young outfielder got it and hit it out. Perez and Michael Morse homered with two outs in the sixth inning on Wednesday night, rallying the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory that ended the Cincinnati Reds longest winning streak of the season at four games. San Francisco won for the 10th time in 13 games, improving the best record in the majors to 38-21. Morse hit a solo shot and Perez had a two-run homer off Cingrani (2-6), who has lost all of his four starts since returning from shoulder tendinitis. Cingrani relies on his fastball -- he threw it 81.7 per cent of the time last season, second-most in the majors -- and threw one to Perez to start the game-changing at-bat. Perez, making only his fourth start this season, was ready to swing. "I was looking for a fastball in and I got a fastball down the middle," Perez said. Perez is in his second stint with the Giants this season. He was only 1 for 21 heading into the game on Wednesday, struggling to adapt to his limited playing time. "Hes probably had the toughest job of anybody since hes been here because he doesnt get many starts," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Their guy shut us down. Hes got a good, live fastball. He was throwing very well. So Perez came through for us." Ryan Vogelsong (4-2) extended his recent streak of solid pitching by giving up two runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings while fanning a career-high nine. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in last four starts. "I just really kept doing what I was doing," Vogelsong said. "I felt the stuff was there, I just need to keep making pitches." It was a rare win in Cincinnati for the Giants, who had lost 11 of their last 12 at Great American Ball Park during the regular season. San Francisco won all three there while taking the division playoff series in 2012. Vogellsong gave up Todd Fraziers team-leading 11th homer in the third inning, a ball that hit the screen on the left field foul pole.dddddddddddd Jay Bruce added a run-scoring double, his third RBI in the last two games. Bruce came into the series with no RBIs since April 25. Sergio Romo pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances. He had allowed a run in each of his last three outings. Billy Hamilton had three singles off Vogelsong, matching his career high. It was his sixth three-hit game. Cingrani has been trying to get back into form after being on the disabled list for 17 days because of tenderness in the left shoulder. His velocity has been inconsistent -- the left-hander throws mostly fastballs -- while hes gone 0-4 with a 5.16 ERA in his four starts. With Cingrani trying to hold a 2-0 lead with two outs in the sixth, Morse hit his team-leading 12th homer on the first pitch. Cingrani gave up a single by Brandon Hicks, and Perez hit his first homer of the season and the second of his career for a 3-2 lead. It was only the fourth time in 28 career starts that Cingrani allowed more than one homer. Hamilton ran the Giants to distraction again, but this time they prevented him from scoring. Hamilton had two infield singles among his three hits, forced two throwing errors and was caught by catcher Buster Posey while he trying to steal third base. The Giants have seven errors in all during the two games. NOTES: LHP Madison Bumgarner (7-3) faces Mike Leake (3-4) in the final game of the series. Bumgarner is 5-0 in his last six starts, matching the longest winning streak of his career. Leake is 4-0 with a 0.92 ERA in his last four starts against the Giants. ... The Giants have scored 122 runs with two outs, the most in the majors. ... Giants OF Hunter Pence extended his hitting streak to five games. ... RHP Mat Latos made what the Reds had hoped would be his final rehab start before hes activated, but he had to leave the game for Triple-A Louisville with a cramp in his calf after only 67 pitches.
