The writer of the book, Max Lucado, didn't start his career as a writer until the year 1964 when he composed 'The Secret'. Ever since then he has been connected to several of Hollywood's most well-known and successful films such as'Elysium','Jurassic Park' and'Chariots'. As a screenwriter he has also written for some of movies targeted at younger audiences including'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. He resides in Los Angeles, where he runs a writing school, The Writer's Workshop.

In this publication he takes us back in time to an era when there continue to be war, turmoil and murder everywhere. Our main protagonist, aced between 2 worlds, is David Storey, a US Air Force soldier turned in an animal rights activist. On this specific occasion he has involved in an underground hunt for three abducted women. His personal beliefs and misgivings about the way in which the government and the military operate are what bring him into contact with those three women, Ella, Sunshine and Coral.

What really makes this book very compelling is the manner in which it presents a view of the US Army in Vietnam that few people even heard of at that time. Though they were battling against machines and other types of destruction and weren't the principal focus of attention, it was clear to see that the humans being used by the Americans were still not comfortable about going into battle Jason Kulpa. It had been their deaths on that battlefield that changed everything. Their story was one of the fantastic unheralded heroes of the contemporary era.

I have read other books that concentrate on the more contemporary war scenes out of places like Vietnam and Iraq but this one, occasionally, is quite a bit more graphic than many. Lucado includes many real-life pictures like the scene of a Vietnamese woman burned alive along with other horrific scenes of warfare. I am aware that some readers might find this disturbing but for the most part it is a excellent read and if you are a huge fan of history or animals then this is a book which you ought to add to your reading list.

1 thing that I found interesting was that Lucado comprised a great deal of history of how the US Army treated the animals once they arrived back home. A lot of men and women see the animals as decorations and several are just interested in the sensual part of it, but you can't deny the fact that these were actual animals. In some cases they have been used as lure for hunters. The writer indicates some of the brutality that was associated with these actions. Overallthis novel is an intriguing look into an element of history that few people have ever considered.

Although this novel is about an episode that occurred over fifty years back, I believe it is essential read for those who are extremely knowledgeable about the history of the US Army. Reading about the treatment of these animals after the war helped me to know what happened during that period of time. Even though it might appear melodramatic occasionally, the writer did a good job of painting a vivid picture of an event that truly happened. If you're trying to find a historical novel about the background of the US Army, I would recommend"About Underground Elephant" by Christina L. Lucado.
