The first Engineering College "Government Engineering College" was started by the Mysore Government in 1917 at Bangalore, later in 1965; the college was renamed as a result of its founder as "University Visvesvaraya School of Engineering" ;.Three more collages were started in 1946. By the time of Integration of the State, there have been absolutely five engineering colleges (two under Government and three in individual sector) in the State.

By 1993-94 there were a complete of 47 Executive Schools in the State which Best university in Ranchi four were Government institutions, eight were assisted and the remainder unaided. By 2008-09 Karnataka had 145 engineering schools, which went to 187 in 2010-11.The large quantity of professional institutions in Karnataka attracts students not merely from the other elements of India but also from foreign countries.

KEA, earlier known as CET, at State level is conducted for entry to Executive Colleges. Entrance to Govt/University maintained Executive Colleges and Regional Design Schools (Karnataka Quota) is completely controlled through CET. Given number of seats as informed from time to time in private/aided, unaided Executive Schools are remaining to be stuffed at the attention of the college management.
