A custom optics is a product that is developed

A custom optics is a product that is developed and designed exclusively by one company for the sole purpose of meeting the requirements related to optical systems. The in-house optical laboratories or research centers develop these systems based on customer specifications. They may incorporate state-of-the-art equipment and technology or they may follow an approved path that is dictated by certain constraints. It may be either small or large systems depending on the size and budget of the company.precision optics

A manufacturer may decide to produce custom-made or hand-made assemblies in terms of optical components. In the former, the system is developed specifically for the benefit of the end users whereas in the latter, the manufacturer may be the end user. The latter kind of manufacturing decision is more favourable since it eliminates the need to go through the cumbersome and costly process of international investment and venture funding. The manufacturer may decide to mass-produce the product in bulk thus saving costs and increasing the turnover rate of the business. Such is the case with the production of custom-built lenses and prisms made of quartz crystals.

A manufacturer may choose to use a single process for the development of custom-made assemblies. This would mean that the only starting material used for developing the assembly is glass and the only technologies employed are those that are currently being used worldwide. Such assemblies thus require global sourcing of raw materials and technologies. One such technology is the application of coatings. Optical coatings are used for a variety of purposes but primarily they improve the performance of mirrors by improving the dispersion of light at various angles. They also make surfaces more resistant to abrasion, heat distortion and stress corrosion.

For custom optics, there are three different approaches used for the fabrication of the final product. The first is the direct fabric fabrication technique where the manufacturer places the glass on a substrate. This is followed by the machining process that involves a spinning motion with the help of a mandrel. After the entire assembly is formed, the fabrication specialist applies special coatings to the surface of the mirror. All these processes are then coupled with the concept of toric accommodation that involves the application of two torus forces along the surface of the mirror.

The third approach that is used for the fabrication of custom-made optics is the optics numerical aperture method. Numerical aperture simply means that there are fewer materials involved in the fabrication of the mirror. There are two types of standard components used in the manufacture of custom-made assemblies; those referred to as standard parts and special parts. Standard parts are those that are commonly found in industry. Special parts however, are manufactured based on the specification of the client.custom optics

The third approach used in the production of custom optics is the machine shop method. Light source fabrication and coating techniques are carried out at a machine shop. There are two types of coatings that are commonly used at a machine shop; oil-based and water-based. The two water-based products include the zinc-based and polycarbonate types.

There are four basic steps in the production of custom optics. The first step is to fabricate the desired assemblies. The second step is to apply the required coating using the appropriate machinery. The last step is to place the fabricated parts in the target area. The final step is to test the assembled parts for accuracy and effectiveness. These four steps are essential to the success of custom-built optical devices.

To increase production volumes, high precision machining techniques are used during the fabrication process. This also leads to significant cost savings since the equipment needed for this process is less costly than the standard components. Since the fabrication of precision-made parts involves fewer materials than standard ones, the volume production levels are significantly higher. To conclude, it can be said that there are significant advantages of utilizing customized optical elements in today's manufacturing techniques.
