Often the ideas we hold in our minds about ourselves and the world are so firmly established that it is difficult to rework them. This is a great opportunity to meet other local students of ACIM and share in your studies. The class is led by Jennifer Feiereisel and is designed to focus on total comprehension of the Course teachings through subject matter study and topical discussions. She uses passages and clues from the Text, Workbook Lessons and Manual for Teachers to bring about clarity and understanding.

This group is held in the Unity of Albany Library and is open to all. Please bring your own book or borrow one from our Library. You may also view the Course text for free on your smartphone or tablet.

There are many different ways to study and practice A Course in Miracles, but the most important thing is to find a way that works for you. The Course is a self-study spiritual thought system, and it has an intentional and careful structure that allows you to access new experience through following its principles. Its three books — the Text, a workbook for students and a Manual for Teachers — cover everything from the principles of the thought system to its practical applications.

The underlying theme of the Course is that God loves you unconditionally, and you are the perfect child of God. However, the belief systems that hold you back from experiencing this love are held firmly in place by your own fears, which have been conditioned over a lifetime of experiences. These beliefs are not easy to let go of, but they can be changed with your willingness to see the world differently.

For most of us, the first step in changing our beliefs is recognizing that we need to learn new ones. We need new tools and practices to replace the old, fear-based ones that have been so effective at keeping us stuck in the same patterns. The Course provides a new set of tools and techniques for learning to choose love over fear.

The language of A Course in Miracles is poetic and written in blank verse, which has led some to compare it with the world’s great literature. Its thought system is intellectually sophisticated, and it combines spiritual inspiration with an understanding of psychological topics such as belief systems and defense mechanisms. It also uses Christian terminology as a foundation, but it evokes universal spiritual themes and includes Eastern spirituality.

It is also important to realize that ACIM is not a religion; it is a spiritual teaching that does not seek to establish any new religious doctrine. In fact, the Course’s introductory material emphasizes that it is only one of “thousands of spiritual paths” that lead to God. If you aren’t familiar with Christianity or its traditions, this may make it challenging to take the Course seriously at first. But the more you read and practice, the more you will begin to recognize that the concepts in the Course are both simple and profound.
