Lessons in Love from A Course in Miracles

The Course is a self-study spiritual thought system that teaches forgiveness as the way to inner peace and the remembrance of truth. It is not a religion, but it does call on us to look beyond the world's appearance and recognize that love is at the heart of everything, including ourselves.

The course was compiled by two Columbia University psychologists, who became tired of the anger and divisiveness that permeated their experience. They began to read the Bible and other books on religious topics, but found they did not find what they were seeking. In an effort to shift their focus, they turned to the idea of God as love and began a process of inner dictation that resulted in A Course in Miracles. It is not credited with an author, although it was written over a period of seven years beginning in 1965.

It has since been published in over thirty-two languages and is taught in many ways throughout the world. It is a modern spiritual classic and has acquired a kind of scriptural status in the eyes of some. Despite its lofty claims, the Course is not an easy reading experience. It requires a willing mind to open to its grand symphony of ideas and loving message.

A Course in Miracles teaches that the world is not what it seems to be, and that healing starts with changing your beliefs. It explains that miracles are not magic tricks that happen in the world, but rather changes in our perception of what is happening. A Course in Miracles teaches that forgiveness is the key to unlocking our spiritual freedom.

Forgiveness is the only path to love and peace. The Course reveals that all paths lead to the same destination – God, and that the true nature of our reality is one of perfect unity and love. It teaches that the only real problem is our own belief in separation and fear. The answer to this problem is the practice of forgiveness, which is not only the antidote to fear and hate, but also the answer to pain and illness.

A Course in Miracles Urtext Manuscripts

A Course in Miracles is a self-study spiritual thought system that teaches the way to universal love and peace through undoing fear and guilt by forgiveness. Its teachings are presented in a three-volume curriculum consisting of the Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. It is not a religion, and it emphasizes that the path it offers is only one of "many thousands."

It began with two Columbia University psychologists who were fed up with anger and division in their world and set out to find a more peaceful way of life. Helen Schucman, a research and clinical psychologist, experienced a series of inner visions and heightened dreams that culminated in a conversation with an inner voice that told her, "This is a course in miracles, please take notes." The writing of the Course was done through a process of inner dictation that she identified as coming from Jesus. It was scribed by her with the help of William Thetford, her department head and tenured professor of medical psychology.

The Course is not meant to teach the meaning of love, which is beyond what can be taught. However, it does provide the means for us to become aware of the presence of love, which is our natural inheritance. This awareness is the first step in healing our relationships.

This urtext edition, published in 1975, is the oldest available typed manuscript of A Course in Miracles. It includes the earliest versions of Chapters 1 through 7 as well as a copy of the original Table of Contents and Index. It also contains the oldest available version of the introduction and preface by Kenneth Wapnick. The urtext is printed on white paper and is bound in hardcover. It has a clear, uncluttered layout, with no footnotes or endnotes. Its only flaw is that topical focus sometimes continues past the end of a paragraph into additional lines, which are grouped together because they represent a single concept or idea.

In addition to the 31 chapters of the Text, this edition includes Book B of A Course in Miracles, a workbook that has 365 lessons for studying daily for a year. The workbook is designed to retrain the mind to see people and things differently so that we can experience love and compassion in all our interactions. It also helps to remove blocks to the memory of God's love.
