3D sensing expansion in 2023 to $18.5 billion

With the launch of the iPhone X in September 2017, Apple is driving new trends in consumer 3D sensing technology and usage. According to research by market research firm Yole Développement, the global 3D imaging and sensing market is expected to expand from $2.1 billion in 2017 to $18.5 billion in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate of 44%. Suppliers including global shutter image sensors, VCSELs, injection molding and glass optics, diffractive optical components (DOE), and semiconductor packaging are expected to benefit.

In the consumer market, smartphone manufacturers are rapidly modifying their 3D sensing development strategies. However, it is hindered that some key components of the current supply chain are still in the hands of specific manufacturers. Once the alternative supply chain of Android smartphones is in place, the loading rate will accelerate and increase from 13.5% in 2018 to 55% in 2023. In addition, 3D sensing is beginning to extend to other consumer devices and automotive applications, and higher-end markets such as healthcare, industry and science will accelerate adoption.
