10 Russian slang words that every foreigner should know.

Do you want to learn 10 Russian slang words that every foreigner should know? I will teach you those words in this article, so keep reading!

Let's go!

1) "Нифига"

The literal meaning of this word is "absolutely not" or "nothing all". For example, "я нифига не слышу", which means "I hear nothing at all".

Russians use this word in their everyday life quite often so you'd better learn this slang word.

2) "Хрен знает"

Russian people use this word when they don't know about something. For instance, "хрен знает, где она!", which means "I don't know where she is".

The literal meaning of "хрен знает" is "horseradish knows". You probably know that horseradish is a vegetable and this phrase sounds kinda funny, I know.

3) "Бухать"

The literal meaning of this word is "to drink alcohol". The whole world thinks that Russians enjoy drinking alcohol.

For example: "мы сегодня с друзьями бухали в ресторане" and that actually means: “My friends and I were drinking alcohol at the restaurant today".
But keep in mind, that "бухать" is commonly used when it's about drinking a LOT.

4) "Тупить"

This verb means "to be dazed or to be slow" or "to be unable to understand something". Russians daily use this word in their speech and usually, they say "Я тебе уже много раз это объяснял, не тупи!" which is "I have explained that to you lots of times, don't be slow on the uptake”.

5) "Чувак"

Russians like calling their male friends "чувак". In English, there is exactly the same word in meaning - "dude". So I guess you understand in which cases you may use it. BUT take it into account, "чувак" is used only for males! The way Russian people may call women sometimes you will see in the next point.

6) "Тёлка"

It is a very strange and even rude word in some way. The literal meaning of the word is a female cow. Sounds not very nice, isn't it? But it is actually a pretty popular word among teenagers. For example: "Эй, ребята, смотрите какая телка!". This means "Hey, guys, look at that hot girl!”.
So BE CAREFUL if you want to use this slang word because girls around you may get offended.

7) "Кайфовать"

This slang word is frequently used in Russian speaking countries. It actually means "to be high on something" or "to be crazy about something" (in a good way).
Russian youngsters like saying: ”Я кайфую от своей новой машины!"
Which means "I am so crazy about my new car!” Another example: "Я кайфую от этой песни" could be translated as "I am high on this song".

8) "Жесть"

There is no exact English translation for this slang word. In Russia, it means something horrible or unpleasant. For example: ”Ты видела какиевысокие цены в магазинах? Это просто жесть!" which is "Have you seen those high prices at the shop? It is just awful”!
For foreigners it is quite hard to pronounce though, haha!

9) "Офигенно!"

In English this word means AWESOME! That is how Russians say it.

If there is something really amazing that you want to describe or express your emotions simply say "Офигенно!". And all the Russians will understand you.

10) "Тусоваться"

This slang verb means "to party". It is often used by young people or teenagers. For instance: "Пошли сегодня тусоваться в клуб", which means "Let's party at the night club today". You may use this word to make your all Russian friends feel envy.
