Philippines drugs war: ICC prosecutor seeks full investigation

The chief prosecutor of International Criminal Court (ICC) has called for a full investigation into suspected crimes against humanity during a deadly drugs crackdown directed by the government of the Philippines.

Fatou Bensouda, who leaves office this week, opened a preliminary probe into the drugs war back in 2018.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte withdrew from the ICC soon afterwards.

Thousands of civilians are known to have died under the campaign.

Nato warns of military challenge posed by China

Nato leaders meeting for a summit in Brussels have warned of the military threat posed by China, saying its behaviour is a “systemic challenge”.

China, they said, was rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, was “opaque” about its military modernisation and was co-operating militarily with Russia.

Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg warned China was “coming closer” to Nato in military and technological terms.

But he stressed the alliance did not want a new Cold War with China.

Biden warns Russia against 'harmful activities' at start of first official trip

US President Joe Biden has launched his first official overseas trip with a warning to Russia that it faces “robust and meaningful” consequences if it engages in “harmful activities”.

Mr Biden made clear his intention to strengthen ties with US allies, following strained relations under the Trump administration.

President Biden arrived in the UK on Wednesday.

China accuses Western firms over 'harmful' kids' goods

China has accused several Western clothing brands of selling goods that could be harmful to children.

A warning notice on the country’s customs administration website listed 81 items imported by companies including Nike, H&M and Zara.

In March, China targeted foreign clothes retailers as an international backlash grows over claims of abuses in the cotton-growing Xinjiang region.

Czech women win MPs' backing for non-gendered surnames

Women in the Czech Republic may soon be able to take non-gendered versions of their surnames after MPs backed a change in the law.

In the Czech language, the ending “-ova” is added to all surnames for women, so Mr Novak’s daughter becomes Ms Novakova.

Women have only been able to drop the “-ova” ending in limited circumstances, such as if they have foreign nationality or live with a foreigner.

The senate will now vote on the change.

Uganda: Two summoned after reporting on BBC investigation

The editor of one of Uganda’s biggest newspapers has been summoned for questioning by police after reporting findings from a BBC investigation into last year’s police killings in Kampala.

Tabu Butagira is the editor the Daily Monitor which ran the story on its front page on 31 May.

Tony Glencross, the managing director of Nation Media Group, which owns the newspaper, has also been summoned.

Donald Trump's 'communications' platform permanently taken offline

Donald Trump’s communications platform has been permanently shut down, his spokesperson told CNBC.

“It was just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on,” senior aide Jason Miller said.

The platform, titled From the Desk of Donald J Trump, launched last month and served as a way for the former president to publish his own content including press releases and videos.

Mr Trump was banned from Facebook and Twitter after the Capitol Hill Riots.

Venus: Nasa announces two new missions

Nasa has announced that it is sending two new missions to Venus in order to examine the planet’s atmosphere and geological features.

The missions, which have each been awarded $500m (£352m) in funding, are due to launch between 2028 and 2030.

Nasa administrator Bill Nelson said the missions would offer the “chance to investigate a planet we haven’t been to in more than 30 years”.

The last probe to visit the planet was the Magellan orbiter in 1990.

US Capitol riots: Second guilty plea in sprawling probem

A Florida man has become only the second person so far to enter a guilty plea for taking part in the storming of the US Capitol building.

Paul Hodgkins, 38, entered the Senate chamber wearing a Trump T-shirt and carrying a “Trump 2020” flag.

The crane operator admitted obstructing an official proceeding of Congress.

A Russian cyber-criminal group was behind a ransomware attack that has targeted the world’s largest meat processing company, the FBI has said.

The FBI said it would was working to bring the REvil group to justice for the hack on JBS.

The cyber-breach over the weekend shut some JBS operations in the US, Canada and Australia.

Israel opposition parties agree to form new unity government

Israeli opposition parties have reached an agreement to form a new government that would end Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12-year tenure as prime minister.

Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party, announced an eight-faction coalition had been formed.
