Tanaman porang akhir-akhir ini semakin ramai diperbincangkan karena memiliki harga jual yang tinggi atau mahal, meski perawatannya terbilang cukup mudah. Lantas, kenapa harga porang mahal dan apa alasannya? Menurut Ketua Departemen Agronomi dan Hortikultura Fakultas Pertanian Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Prof Dr Edi Santosa S.P M.Si, petani saat ini memang sangat memanfaatkan momentum harga mahal dari penjualan tanaman porang ini. "Ya ini karena penggunaannya sangat luas itu, jadi (harga porang) relatif mahal," kata Edi kepada Kompas.com, Sabtu (4/4/2021). "Karena penggunaannya luas, barang itu (tanaman porang) banyak dicari orang," imbuhnya. Menurut Edi, penggunaan dan potensi tanaman porang ini memang cukup besar baik dari aspek medis, sosial, hingga ekonomi.
