In 1630, after a long period of peace in Japan following the end of the clans, thousand of samurais do not have masters and are living in absolute poverty. The ronin Hanshiro Tsugumo and former samurai of Lord of Geishu arrives at the house of Lord Lyi requesting a spot to commit hara-kiri (an honorable form of suicide). Tsugumo is received by Umenosuke Kawabe, who tells the story of the young samurai Motome Chijiiwa that arrived at the house also asking for a place to commit hara-kiri but expecting to receive coins instead. The warrior Hikokuro Omodaka convinces the clan to force Chijiiwa to really commit suicide using his bamboo blade as an example to other samurais that would appear using the same pretext to receive coins from the master. Tsugumo discloses that the lad Chijiiwa was his son-in-law that was forced to the situation expecting to raise some money to treat his sick wife and baby son. Further, Tsugumo had arrives in the house expecting to die not committing suicide, but revenging Chijiiwa, his daughter and his grandson.
An elder ronin samurai arrives at a feudal lord's home and requests an honorable place to commit suicide. But when the ronin inquires about a younger samurai who arrived before him things take an unexpected turn.
This is a genuine, unique and sincere samurai film. The flawless direction Kobayashi presents to us depletes all criticisms. The prudent pace the story moves in is in itself the depiction of the samurai society: the extreme respect, the omnipresent rituals of courtesy, the will to listen to your foes, the patience.

The key in the greatness of this film -my favourite samurai film, personally- lies in the meticulous (negative reviewers would have to say here: "painstaking") representation of the relationships between these people who live for and by an immutable code of honor,and how the story ends up telling us that, in the end -for better or for worse- man is above any social principle or code. Hanshiro Tsumogo (the main character) is, after all, only demanding an apology for the way the young Motome Chijiiwa was treated, but we see how arrogance stands in the way of the samurai code, and he's left empty-handed.

On the other side of the coin, Motome Chijiiwa's act of love for his wife and son, which involves his total humiliation, again defies the samurai code.

"After all, this thing we call samurai honor is ultimately nothing but a facade." says Hanshiro Tsugumo after recounting his story. Not facade in the sense of fictitious, but in the sense of superficial. Because there may be hundreds, thousands of different cultures in the world, but in the end we all love the same way, we hate alike, we envy in the same manner... Harakiri has to be a film where there weren't really stunt doubles or special effects. The scene where the samurai tried stabbing himself with the bamboo daggers didn't seem fun at all, and i think he got paid well for that scene. When the samurais got into a duel and got their tops cut of, it was a symbol of disrespect and pointed out a good point and correlated perfect to its cultural history. The fighting scene in the mountains was epic and it will remain a classic. The director made sure to dramatize the fight by having the actors step back after every sword swing. The fight took a bit longer than it should have, but I'm guessing no one wants to rush a duel .
